Snakes Alive!
|
Every year the ACT Herpetological Association (ACTHA) and the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) put on a week long exhibition in January showcasing a variety of Australian reptiles and amphibians. The ANBG publicises the event and provides an idyllic location amongst the world’s ‘best collection of Australian plants’, and ACTHA members provide the animals for the display and staff the exhibit. Funds raised through Snakes Alive! give ACTHA the opportunity to make donations to regional conservation problems such as the northern and southern corroboree frog breeding programs and projects aimed at furthering herpetofauna protection and recovery, education, training, and research projects. Species local to the ACT region are displayed when available, such as the highly endangered Northern Corroboree Frog (Pseudophryne corroboree) and threatened species such as the Grassland Earless Dragon (Tympanocryptis pinguicolla) and Striped Legless Lizard (Delma impar). Members of the public receive an exceptional educational experience with the opportunity to learn about herpetofauna hands-on from dedicated ACTHA members who staff the event. |
