Monitor Lizards Found to Breathe Unidirectionally Like Birds (Scientific American)

A lizard captures oxygen from air both when inhaling and exhaling—a feat normally associated with birds. Many scientists believe birds developed the adaptation to cope with the enormous requirements of energy needed to take flight, and the discovery of "unidirectional breathing" in the savannah monitor lizard raises questions about when and why the trait first evolved.

Snakes Alive! 2014

The annual Snakes Alive! exhibition for 2014 will again be organised by ACTHA in collaboration with the Australian National Botanic Gardens.  The theme this year will be 'Celebrating Australia's Pythons'.  Make sure you tell your family and friends about this wonderful event, where you can see and interact with many different species of reptiles and amphibians while learning more about them in a friendly and educational environment.

Where: Crosbie Morrison Building, Australian National Botanic Gardens 
Time: 20 - 26 January, 10 am – 4 pm weekdays, 10 am – 6 pm Saturday and Sunday 
Cost: Adults $5, concessions $4, children $2
